Executive Summary

The 5-day Total Station Survey Workshop held at Mandsaur University, from October 13, 2023, to  October 17, 2023, was a resounding success. Organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, the  workshop aimed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in total  station surveying. The main trainer, Mr. Saurabh Jain, along with his assistant Mr. Sushil, facilitated the  event. Two Leica total station machines were utilized for the surveying activities.

Workshop Objectives

The primary objectives of the workshop were to:

1. Familiarize students with the various components and operation of total station machines. 2. Instruct students on centering and leveling procedures to ensure accurate survey data. 3. Teach students about topographic survey methods and data interpretation.

4. Provide hands-on training in stakeout procedures, area and volume calculations. 5. Demonstrate precise distance measurement techniques using total stations.

Workshop Details

Day 1 (October 13, 2023): Introduction to Total Station Surveying & Centering and Leveling  Techniques.

The workshop commenced with an introduction to total station surveying, its importance in civil  engineering, Scope of surveying in different civil engineering works and the workshop’s schedule. Mr.  Saurabh Jain explained the basic components of total station machines and their functions. Also, students  learned how to set up the total station, ensuring it is accurately centered and leveled. Practical sessions  allowed students to gain hands-on experience with these crucial processes.

Day 2 (October 14, 2023): Topographic Survey and Data Collection.

On the second day, Students were introduced to topographic survey methods and data collection. They  learned to create maps and gather essential data for various engineering applications.

Day 3 (October 15, 2023): Task for students to prepare maps using coordinates and interpretation of  data.

On the third day, students done the topographic survey by their own in which the students take the  coordinates of the ground and prepare the map of different objects like road, ground etc.

Day 4 (October 16, 2023): Stakeout, Area, and Volume Calculations

The fourth day was dedicated to stakeout procedures, as well as area and volume calculations using data  collected earlier. Participants gained insight into how total stations are used in construction and land  development projects.

Day 5 (October 17, 2023): Distance Measurement and Conclusion

The final day focused on precise distance measurement techniques, including measurement errors and  correction methods. The workshop concluded with a review of the key topics covered during the event.

Machine and Equipment Used

Two Leica total station machines were utilized throughout the workshop, providing students with hands-on  experience on these state-of-the-art instruments.

Outcomes and Feedback

The workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participants. Students gained a  comprehensive understanding of total station surveying techniques, and the hands-on experience with the  Leica machines was particularly appreciated. The knowledge and skills acquired during the workshop are  expected to be highly beneficial for their future careers in civil engineering and land surveying.

Acknowledgments

We extend our gratitude to Mr. Saurabh Jain and Mr. Sushil for their excellent training and guidance  throughout the workshop.

Conclusion

The 5-day Total Station Survey Workshop held at Mandsaur University, Civil Engineering Department was  a successful endeavor, equipping students with essential skills and knowledge in the field of civil  engineering and land surveying. This workshop represents a significant step in ensuring that our students  are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in their careers.
