Sustainable Fashion

Department of Fashion Design conducted an Expert lecture on  ‘Sustainable Fashion’, dated 10/12/21,  for students of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year,   by Dr. Babita Bhandari who is an expert in apparel designing and construction and eco-conscious fashion design. She is presently working as an assistant professor in the textile design dept of NIFT Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) and is ICAR JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) in Home Science and Net JRF in clothing and textile. She also was awarded a ‘gold medal’ for her master’s thesis on natural dyeing.

Ms. Shalini Pandey started the session by welcoming and introducing the Guest Speaker.  After that Dr. Babita started the lecture with an introduction to sustainable and how does sustainable fashion works, She gave a briefing about the topic and explained how students can rectify sustainable fashion and how can anyone differentiate them from other fashions.  She shared a presentation with everyone in which she had her topic explained thoroughly, In this session students and Dr. Babita had a back and forth discussion on this and which helped students to clear their concept related to sustainable fashion. Sustainable fashion (also known as eco-fashion,  is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice.  Sustainable fashion deals with considering fashion from the perspective of a variety of stakeholders ranging from contemporary producers and consumers of clothes to future producers and consumers.

Dr. Babita Bhandari explained the purpose of sustainable fashion.  She said ‘the goal of sustainable fashion is to create flourishing ecosystems and communities through its activity. This may include: increasing the value of local produce and products; prolonging the lifecycle of materials; increasing the value of timeless garments; reducing the amount of waste, and reducing the harm to the environment created as a result of production and consumption.

In this expert lecture, more than 17 students took part among which teachers were also present for this lecture, the session was closed by a vote of thanks by the head of the fashion department “Dr. Sarita Hooda”.
